With every a new degree of independence the child has some additional responsibility of work. So the tendency of life is not that of doing nothing, is not that of resting, but that of always doing more and more. The child does not slacken his effort, on the contrary, makes an effort to seek things which are more and more difficult.”
-Maria Montessori
One of our Favorite SMART board websites
Tumblebooks
The children would like to use Tumblebooks at home. Enter from any browser to Phoenix Public Library and go to the children's section. Tumblebooks needs to be typed in or clicked on and can be found in English and Spanish. Children can listen, read on their own, answer questions, and create searches and games. Please use this as some of their weekly reading homework and have them write a sentence or two about the story and what they did.
This week we did many works, had Dibbels and AIMS web testing, time lines, and several science experiments. Children are enjoying their daily work and ended their week with a Big Bang!

August 5, 2011 Welcome!
So far, everyone seems to be happy, healthy, and glad to be back in school. Our first three days were over before we knew it. Children are working on sense of community and learning about their classroom. Peace doves went home on Friday and were also hung around the courtyard.
Thank you to everyone for returning your district documents and discussing the student handbook with your child. Canvas bags were worked on and the theme is Peace. Children understand that they are using these decorative totes as they are reuseable and recycleable. Our environment is a special resource and we are working on maintaining it. I, too, will try to use as little paper as possible throughout the year!
Susan Zbick, Meghan's mom, is our e mail parent. She has the class list and information. Cristina Chacon, Isiss' mom, is our room parent. The class schedule, specials schedule and additional information were given out at Back to School Night. Please feel free to contact me if there is anything else you need.
Homework will be sent home on Monday and will be returned the following Monday. Parents are responsible for ensuring that the work is done and returned on time.
Parent volunteers are needed to read with the children. Please let me know when you are available. This will count towards your ten hours of service. Parent volunteers are also needed to help with restoration of our environment, materials making, and other activities. Our room parent should be contacted if you can assist our class. Thank you.
Children will be making personal timelines. Please send pictures from one year to present age. Your child will write one sentence at home with you about each picture. Pictures need to be sent to school, but please don't send your only copy. I cannot ensure you that they will come home in the same condition they arrived in! If your child is seven, for example, they will have seven sentences to write.
Mrs. Gina and I are looking forward to an enriching and rewarding year!
Thank you for being a part of our "team"!

End of Year
Dear Parents,
As the school year comes to an end, Mrs. Gina and I would like to thank you for participating in your children's education. We can't thank you enough for all the support you have provided us with throughout the year. We have truly been blessed this year with an amazing group of children. Each and every one of them brought something "special" to our classroom community.
We wish you a safe, healthy, and happy summer. Enjoy your family and your time together. Please continue to read with and to your children every day and practice their math facts. Encourage them to keep journals and to write about what they read. If we continue to remind children that learning can be fun, they will continue to grow and be nutured. A life long love of learning is one of the most valuable experiences we can provide them with.
Sincerely and gratefully,
Wendy Silver and Gina Ramirez

October Field Trip
Dear Parents,
We will be going to Tempe Performing Arts Theater on Thursday, October 14, to see "Frog and Toad". We need to be at the theater by 10:00 A.M. for a 10:30 show. If you would like to chaperone and/or assist with the transportation of children, please let us know. The original plan was to take the light rail and walk to the show. We also plan to bring a sack lunch from school and have a picnic at the park. Admission is $8.00 per person (children and adults) and I have to pay by September 14. There is no limit to the amount of adults that can come on this trip, but we do need to know an exact count before making payment, as the money is non- refundable. We will be sending home a permission slip next week. Please check your calendars and get back to Mrs. Gina or me as soon as you can coordinate your schedule.
Upon returning to school that day we have an hour of Art (which the children love) so please make sure they return to school with the class. If you would like an opportunity to volunteer by helping our class in materials making or other necessary assistance, please let us know and we will make arrangements with you.
Sincerely,
Wendy Silver and Gina Ramirez

Ms. Silver's Blog
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your wonderful children. They are a blessing! Please select a book with them this weekend for their first book report (see homework folder, optional for first years). Their brassica plants have started growing and we look forward to continued interest and discussions about all our science projects and experiments. They had their first great lesson and that should inspire them to be inquisitive. Please encourage discussion about all they did during their first full week in school. If you need to reach me, you can send a note or e mail me at: wendy.silver@phxelem.k12.az.us.
Sincerely,

We have a wonderful 2010/2011 class!
Friday, August 6, 2010
Dear Parents,
Our first three days of school were awesome. Your children are amazing and a pleasure to have in class. We had PE, Art, and Music specials and everyone enjoyed the specials classes. We learned some new songs, morning greetings, and started math and morning routines. Children were happy to be back. First year assessments were given in reading and sight words. They will be finished next week. All students did math and had spelling preliminary assessing. Mentor buddies were assigned and ad hoc groups were established. Friday afternoon we did the first five science experiments which included the three states of matter, mixtures, and suspensions. The children were captivated. We have the best class! Thank you, again, for allowing me to teach your precious children. We are most grateful and look forward to a wonderful year!
Sincerely,
Wendy Silver and Gina Ramirez
